Any parent who has a kid playing competitive hockey in any age group has heard all of the comments from friends, “experts”, media and more. Most recently ESPN commentator Barry Melrose quipped that “parents ruin minor league sports.” Well Barry as moronic as your comment was, here are five more that top it.
5. Your son/daughter plays hockey? What else does he/she do?
This is the age old insinuation that if your kid plays competitive hockey then obviously they have nothing else going on in their lives. This comment usually comes from no mind individuals who don’t have children in competitive sports. If they did, they would know that to be competitive, you need to be focussed and committed. There is nothing more entertaining than analyzing hockey parents at rinks across the city. Moms and Dads included, they range anywhere from passive to insane. Most of you should be able to place yourself in three or more of these categories.
You’ve all seen these guys. They are the ones who volunteer for positions in the hockey community at the team or board level and talk just loud enough at the rink so that everyone knows how important they are. They usually have fancy titles attached to their names that they thought up themselves. The rest of the parents are supposed to be dazzled and amazed at their abundance of talent. The biggest problem with these types is that they are not volunteering for the betterment of the league or their child. They do it to make themselves . . . FULL STORY

So here we go again. Now it is the baseball writers who are on their holier than thou soapbox as they refuse to induct anyone into the Baseball Hall of Fame due to the suspected use of banned substances by a number of inductees. At the same time, cyclist Lance Armstrong has gone on Oprah Winfrey to declare that he was lying the whole time and he actually did take performance enhancing drugs while winning his 7 Tour de France championships.
So for all the naive sports fans, writers, journalists and broadcasters – I’m going to say it – hold on to your seats. Many high performance athletes take some sort of performance enhancing drug – they always have and always will.
